Enhancing Written Assessment Efficiency for Schools and Universities Through AI

The Overview

Built as a culminating thesis project for Holy Angel University, O'key-Ask is an AI-powered educational assessment kiosk. It was designed from the ground up to align with both Philippine DepEd (Basic Education) and CHED (Higher Education) standards. The system tackles the time-consuming process of exam generation, administration, and grading by automating the entire lifecycle through a dedicated hardware kiosk.

Technical Architecture

The project required a robust combination of web development, AI integration, and hardware orchestration.

  • Frontend & BackendThe user interface is built with React and Redux for state management. The backend is powered by Node.js and Express.js to handle heavy API routing and integration.
  • AI Pipeline & OCRCustom Python microservices power the intelligence. Automated test generation and essay grading use a dual Google Gemini and OpenAI pipeline. For physical test ingestion, OCR-based exam checking is handled seamlessly using Google Cloud Vision and OpenCV.js.
  • Hardware Kiosk IntegrationThe software is deployed directly onto a Raspberry Pi kiosk, which is physically integrated with a scanner (for OCR inputs) and a printer (for instant exam generation and results).

Validation & Results

The system was vigorously validated by 19 educators across basic and higher education institutions, proving its massive impact on administrative efficiency.

DepEd (Basic Education) Impact

  • Validated by elementary teachers from NorthVille 15 Integrated School.
  • Reduced assessment cycle: from 10.5 hours to 12.5 minutes (97.78% efficiency gain).
  • Mean usability rating: 4.74 / 5.

CHED (Higher Education) Impact

  • Validated by Computer Engineering faculty from Holy Angel University.
  • Reduced assessment cycle: from 19.5 hours to 26 minutes (97.61% efficiency gain).
